Detailed information concerning Visions in Genshin Impact.
Visions are bestowed by the archons (gods, but more specifically most likely lesser gods) to 'humans' (basically all humanoid races in Teyvat) that demonstrate an incredibly strong ambition or conviction. The condition of the ambition/conviction to have one manifest needs to be to such a strength or fear that only those known to be dying, about to die, or in a severely critical life or death situation that are known to receive these visions. This criteria has been accepted by the people of Teyvat has the standard way to receive a vision. There is currently no other mentioned way that non-vision holders and vision holders know of for being able to obtain one, and it isn't foolproof. Not many individuals are in possession of of a vision in Teyvat, they are seen as an extremely rare individual.

It has since been brought into light during the story that visions don't necessarily have to do with life/death situations, but it's convoluted because of the particular circumstances (not all vision users have a specific near death situation in their lives, and we don't know the exact reason/circumstance /situation of the characters receiving them for 95% Regardless, we know there are rare specific items that spiritually fuse together both the person and the vision. If the vision is "taken from them" (more on that in a minute), the wielder begins to deteriorate. They lose everything related to the reason they received the vision in the first place. They forget the people that influenced them growing up, the reasons they did things that they do remember in the past, lose drive, and some even go insane from the loss (it's not solely from the vision loss, but a cumulation of things.) The wielder also loses all drive to live, becomes listless and unable to find their place in the world. These things turn when the vision is "returned" to them.
"Taken away from them" is a little bit convoluted due to the story right now. Wielders don't need to have the vision on their person at all times to avoid the effects described above, and they may be able to use it when it's a very short distance away from being physically on them in some form, as well. A person can absolutely give their vision to someone else or abandon the vision for an extended period of time (suggested to be indefinitely) with no detrimental effects. However, when one of the ruling archons decides to confiscate the visions of her subjects, we see the detrimental effects of it being taken away from the user. There are two possibilities to this, with the former being the more popular assumption:
If the user of the vision dies, the vision itself goes gray and becomes "empty." Visions that have lost their wielders are highly sought after as many believe there may be a way to "reactivate" the vision and thus those who are not blessed with a vision from the archons may still be able to gain its power for themselves. So far no one has successfully managed this in terms of available canon knowledge.
The way the powers work through the vision isn't as simple as a magic flaming sword, for example. The vision acts as a link of bringing about the manifestation of the element from the ambitions/desires of the user, and I'm pretty sure although the the energy is elemental and drawn from Teyvat itself, that the Vision is what allows the "powers" to manifest via using the link to access Celestia's divine powers.
There's no specific way to work it like a physical mechanism or is used, and it only works for the specific wielder it was gifted to. Even if a Vision user is carrying another individual's vision, they can't tap into the second vision's powers.
As of the canon point Childe is currently taken from, it has been heavily suggested that at least part of the vision holder's soul is in the Vision itself along with their string sense of will and any memories that are connected to the ambition that brought about their vision manifesting in the first place.

Will update as more info becomes known.

In the image to the left, the orb is manifested by the power of the Archon that the vision is from. The gold plating around it is a customized setting for the vision and carries in style depending on the character and which country they are from.
The item becomes an accessory that the Vision user carries with them.

- 1) because the Vision was taken against their will, the connection between the wielder and user is severed and you get the husk of a wielder + a vision in the same state that it goes into when their wielder dies.
2) it's specifically that the archon themselves severed the connection between the Vision and Wielder upon confiscating it, which is well within an archon's power to do so.
